Predicting Mass Transfer in Liquid–Liquid Extraction Columns

In this work, the GEneralised Multifluid Modelling Approach (GEMMA) is applied to simulation of liquid–liquid extraction in a Rotating Disc Column (RDC) and Pulsed Sieve-plate Extraction (PSEC). A mass transfer modelling methodology developed, which multiphase flows, droplet size distribution dispersed phase holdup predicted with computational fluid dynamics are coupled correlations predict overall transfer. The numerical results for stage-averaged holdup, Sauter mean diameter axial solute concentration RDC PSEC agree experimental observations. proposed method provides an accurate predictive tool complex such as those observed intensified extraction, alternative approach column design using empirical or pilot plant study.
